MDX Finalizes Licensing Agreement with UBC and Acquires Rights to Innovative Non-Invasive Imaging Technology
For Immediate Release
Vancouver, BC, June 2nd, 2005 - MDX Medical Inc. (TSX.V: MDX) announced today it has completed a definitive License Agreement with The University of British Columbia (UBC) for an innovative diagnostic technology developed at Vancouver General Hospital. The technology, using near-infrared spectrophotometry (NIRS), provides non-invasive diagnosis of diseases of the bladder and diagnostic testing for patients who experience urinary incontinence and bladder dysfunction. The terms of the agreement grant MDX Medical exclusive, global rights to develop, manufacture and market the technology.
In the United States, market estimates indicate over 40 million and men and women suffer from urinary incontinence, a disorder of the bladder which can be effectively treated if properly diagnosed. The current, highly invasive dual catheter system for diagnosing bladder diseases results in very low compliance in the majority of patients, leaving them with limited treatment options. The Company believes this NIRS technology has the potential to become the standard of care in this large and growing patient population.
Mark Thomson, President of MDX Medical stated;
"Completing the License Agreement with UBC represents a significant corporate milestone for MDX. In addition to providing a second technology platform to drive the growth of the Company, the management and Board of MDX have been given a vote of confidence from a leading Canadian university to develop and sell the NIRS technology world wide. This recognition speaks to the experience and commitment of the MDX team"
Dr. Lynn Stothers, Director of the Bladder Care Center at Vancouver General Hospital offered the following comments;
"On behalf of co-inventors Dr. Andrew Macnab and Roy Gagnon, I am thrilled to see NIRS on the bladder take the next big step from an important academic discovery to industrial medical device development by MDX. We look forward to working with MDX on the development needed to realize the benefits this technology holds for patients and clinicians alike."
The company is now completing an extensive commercial development plan for the NIRS technology, which will be approved and implemented prior to the end of this current quarter. In accordance with the agreement, the terms of the agreement remain confidential.
