MDX Begins NIRS Urodynamics Clinical Study
Vancouver, BC - (February 22, 2006) MDX Medical Inc. (TSX.V: MDX) announced today that it has commenced a human clinical study of its non-invasive near infra-red spectrophotometry (NIRS) urodynamics technology licensed from The University of British Columbia.
The technology is a breakthrough in bladder care providing non-invasive monitoring and diagnosis of bladder dysfunction including urinary incontinence. The study, supported by a grant from The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), consists of a series of human clinical experiments to support the commercialization of NIRS. (see news release Sept 22, 2005).
Barry Allen, President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "This study will increase our technical and clinical understanding as well as provide further verification of the NIRS technology in the bladder."
This research will establish baseline factors of NIRS for the bladder as well as establishing characteristic NIRS tracings for each of the major bladder conditions. These tracing patterns will enable the diagnostic capabilities of urodynamics spectrograms, similar to the way EKG reference patterns characterize cardiac function.
The study is taking place at the Bladder Care Centre, UBC Hospital. Enrolment for 60 subjects started Feb 8, 2006 and will end in the middle of April. Partial study results will be presented at the American Urological Association (AUA)'s Annual Meeting, Atlanta, Georgia, May, 2006. The study is being led by Associate Professor Lynn Stothers, Director of the Bladder Care Center at UBC Hospital, Professor Andrew MacNab and technology specialist Roy Gagnon, both internationally recognized experts in the field of NIRS based at BC Children and Women's Hospital.
The World Health Organization estimates that bladder dysfunction and related urinary incontinence affects 200 million people worldwide with annual treatment costs estimated at USD $16 billion. This condition, when properly diagnosed and assessed, can be treated effectively.
